Human/Nature
Step into a world that explores the intersection and struggle between Organic Symmetry and Imposed Order.
This Series of paintings explores the relationship between a naturally occurring organic state and a perceived/imposed structure, much like Humans struggling to achieve either a balance with or mastery over Nature itself.
From the balance of Nature- like plant symmetry, shell structures and even the spiral of galaxies- as related to a Golden Mean, (linked to the Fibonacci Sequence) Humans, attempting to understand Divine Proportion, assigned it a ratio (1.618) to impose an underlying sense of order in art and design, used for hundreds of years as in DaVinci’s Vitruvian Man in 1490 and in architecture as far back as the Greek Parthenon in 432 BCE.
Of course more contemporary, though less harmonious, examples of Humans ‘mastery’ over Nature also show up in city planning grids, track home suburbia, strip mining and clearcut forests.
Here, however, while not strictly conforming to a demonstration of ancient formulas, an attempt is made to represent the idea of Nature through organic gouache forms, under and overlayed with graphite scaffolding woven together to create support and an intentional Human sense of balance.
